Google Social Search Served with Buzz

Google has updated its Social Search product to include results from various social sites, such as, Twitter, Flickr, Reader or YouTube. Google has stated that it will crawl only the public content from your connections. This is great news for all those concerned about privacy issues. However, to clarify users can use “My Social Content” or “My Social Circle” links in the Social Search results. This will help them verify content they are sharing and the friends they are connected to.

Google has expanded Social Search using additional links, which appear in the Buzz tab of a user’s Google profile. When a user signs in, Google will take a guess as to whose public content he/she might want to see in search results and populate the relevant content from the user’s “social circle”.

Here’s how it works – if a friend shared an interesting story on the hurricane in the US, it might show up when you search for climatic conditions in the US.

The content comes only from a user’s “social circle”, which might include a number of private and public connections. This includes contacts through the links on a user’s Google profile, people you chat with often on Gchat or even people you’ve followed on Reader or Buzz too. With linked accounts to services like Twitter, Google will tap into the user’s contacts. In a bid to improve social search, Google has started to follow a set of public links from users’ profiles to improvise on populating “social circles”. Although Google did not release any specific data about the Google Social Search, Matt Cutts  said that the team was happy with the [Social Search] usage they have seen.

The enhancement shows that Google is keenly interested in the success of its Social Search options, especially Buzz. It is clear, today, that personalized search is the way forward and the Internet giant is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that it is a better provider of this experience.
