The First Browser with Indian Roots Comes From Bangalore

As Firefox, IE8, Chrome, Safari and Opera browsers compete to emerge as the ‘best than the rest,’ here is another entrant from India aiming to make it big in the industry. As we all know, India’s very first browser Epic (Download here ) has already hit the web that targets to match and enhance browsing habits and experience of its Indian audiences. But is it strong enough to withstand the already existing market of the respective browsers? While that we would only know with time, let us see what this Indian browser has for its users.

Epic, designed by Hidden Reflex, a Bangalore based software startup is based on opensource Mozilla platform. Aiming to establish its foothold firmly on the Indian soil, Epic has focused to keep the interface completely India centric. The first step in the direction comes with a support for the Indian languages(currently 12) with its free built-in word processor, which is sure to prove a major factor in its rapid adaption across the country.

Next ,the browser offers  1500+ customized Indian themes ( just as Chrome)and wallpapers ranging from bollywood stars to regional film actors , freedom fighters, cricketers and many others. This would keep the patriotic users more close to their nationality yet offering innumerable choices to keep their browsing interface interesting and lively.

Coming over to the most important factor of security, Epic boasts of being the first antivirus browser in the world that comes with a built free antivirus scanning and healing software. It also stays more vigilant about the user’s online security by popping up a warning when they’re about to visit potentially dangerous websites.

The browser makes searching Indian content extremely easy with its sidebar that assimilates a bunch of widgets such as news, maps, jobs, games, gmail, yahoo, amazing skins and lot more.  Latest news on politics, religion and nation available on the most famous publication can be accessed using this sidebar. Also the users can browse through entertaining videos, recent music albums, stock quotes  along with staying updated with the live cricket scores flashing on the bar. It even broadcasts live television channels, sure to leave Indian soap lovers out there grinning with pleasure.

And ofcourse Epic’s sidebar also takes care of your online presence with social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and Orkut included that can be accessed directly by the user. Also worth mentioning is its ability to access files and folders from the browser itself. I like the snippets feature too that makes it very easy and simple to save test/images from pages and then organise them with labels. And just incase you want more out of your browser, you may add more functionality and customization by installing Firefox add-ons to Epic.

All this sounds sumptuous and I have already begun to love it. But will this India only strategy work for its engineers? Firstly the aforementioned browsers which have been around from long time control the web entirely even in India. Also speed of uploading and navigation through pages, tab handling, security and other similar elements principally govern the success of the browsers. Epic promises and currently delivers all of it however as a new kid on the block, it still has lots to learn from its counterparts and it wouldn’t be easy to overcome the success of the exiting market leaders too soon. But with the dominant Indian flavor in its recipe of browsing, it has all the potential to become the default browser on the Indian laptop and computer screens. After all it is the first ever browser for India.

So do you think Epic which looks more like Bing, Chrome, Firefox and IE put together, has all that is required to satisfy the web users? Should it aim for a global footprint? Will Indians give up on other browsers for Epic? Will you use Epic? We would love to hear your views on this.
